February 2012 | New Zealand’s largest solar subdivision to be built in Canterbury.

New Zealand's largest solar subdivision is on its way to Canterbury, supplying home owners with about a quarter of a typical home's energy needs.

Maxim Projects Ltd, one of Canterbury's developers leading the rebuilding of Christchurch, today announced a new partnership with Meridian Energy and SolarCity to build New Zealand's largest subdivision utilising solar energy.

The solar installations will be made available as standard for each new home constructed by Maxim at its 2,200 section Highfield subdivision in northwest Christchurch. Additionally, solar installations will be available across Maxim's full 3,500 lot property portfolio, the company confirms. Each solar installation will provide around a quarter of a typical home's energy needs.

The Maxim Group of companies has earned a reputation as one of the leaders of New Zealand's new generation of design build construction companies. Maxim's focus on design build development and construction of land and building projects emphasises the proactive application of leading design principles and work practices in every project.

Stewart Fowler MD Panasonic NZ, Gary Foot MD Enatel/EnaSolar, Andrew Booth CEO SolarCity and Maxim Projects Directors
Logan Townsend & Roy Hamilton.

Andrew Booth, CEO of SolarCity said, “The solar across Maxim's developments will showcase the important role solar will play in rebuilding a more sustainable future for Canterbury. It's fantastic that such a progressive and world class development leads the way, powered by 21st Century energy. Solar is one of the fastest growing energy technologies in the world, simply because it is clean, reliable and a readily available alternative to fossil fuels.”

“Homeowners will see massive benefits of these new solar systems, as they will provide at least one quarter of the power needed to run their homes,” he said. “The systems will also allow power to be fed back into the grid, further reducing the daily running of their properties.”

Local Christchurch firm EnaSolar will be manufacturing the solar inverters used in the solar technology solution in the Maxim Project development.

Gary Foot, Managing Director of Enatel/EnaSolar said, “There is a growing demand for solar technologies from consumers and industry professionals, and we are elated that Maxim Projects has decided to include solar energy in their development.

“This requires real vision and innovation on their part and a project of this scale will clearly become the ‘bench mark' for the building industry and consumers alike wishing to adopt solar energy, not just in Christchurch but throughout New Zealand,” he said.

“I am thrilled that Maxim Projects have the broad thinking to offer solar as a standard feature in their new homes,” Foot added.

“The Canterbury rebuild is an ideal opportunity to demonstrate that companies like ours are ready, willing and able to offer the professional support that is required for commercial and consumer domestic renewable solutions. And with the need to support local employment and local projects such as the Highfield development, our business is geared to supply the demand.”

Roy Hamilton, Director of Maxim Projects said, "Maxim is proud of its LifetimeCare commitment. Our developments are already some of the first in New Zealand to carry the government's LifeMark credentials and our homes will now be built with electricity supplied by Meridian (New Zealand's largest renewable energy generator) and will be the first to be fitted with the latest in solar technology. We are aiming to make our developments centres of excellence across the nation and we are committed to leading the way by building the nation's first solar subdivision."

Bill Highet, Meridian Energy's General Manager Retail, is proud of Meridian's involvement in the project. “This partnership builds on the solar hot water campaign we launched in July that aims to help our customers reduce their electricity bills while also helping the country reduce its carbon emissions. It also means we can help rebuild Canterbury, supporting our communities for generations to come.”

October 2011 | Award leads to orders for inverter firm.

Christchurch manufacturer EnaSolar has just secured an order for its solar inverters within 24 hours
of winning an innovation award.

EnaSolar, a subsidiary of well-known Christchurch electronics and telecommunications specialist
Dennis Chapman's company Enatel, won the award on Thursday evening for Innovation in Manufacturing
at the Bayer sponsored New Zealand innovation awards.

The evaluation team "was impressed by EnaSolar's adaptive innovation of existing technologies and its
customer-led product design".

EnaSolar business development manager Alan Booth said the company had two calls yesterday from
people who had heard about the award. One was from a distributor in Britain and another an Australian customer.

"Brand equity is hard to come by nowadays unless you have something to hang your hat on so [winning an award]
does make a difference," Booth said.

Solar inverters convert the energy collected by solar panels into alternating current to run appliance in homes.

EnaSolar, started about 2½ years ago, sold its products through distributors and installers and predominantly
sold the solar inverters overseas – in Australia and Britain, where "we are very strong". Both countries had
incentives for solar power through "feed in tariff" schemes.

EnaSolar was the only manufacturer of solar inverters in New Zealand, Australia had 2 and there were only
about 50 serious manufacturers worldwide, Booth said.

"Its innovative because of the way we have applied the technology. Our aim is to become the default
inverter supplier in Australasia. To do that we decided to do everything in New Zealand which is very rare."

Typically a high cost, high technology product like that would have been made in Asia.

New Zealand was producing top high tech products now, he said, but it was still a challenge to change the
local mindset that the best was overseas.

The company had used Chapman's design knowledge and also had a strong design team. Booth declined
to reveal annual sales figures.

EnaSolar's parent Enatel started out providing contracting manufacturing to the electronics industry in Christchurch.

It now produces a wide range of products and has become one of the key providers of standby DC power
solutions to the global market.

September 2010 | Christchurch Earthquake.

Christchurch suffered a significant earthquake on Saturday morning at 4.30am. It measured 7.1 on the Richter scale and was centered
33kms west of the central business district.

There has been structural damage to a number of buildings particularly older masonry buildings, which dominate the CBD. Fortunately there
has been no loss of life and very few major injuries, mainly due to the timing of the earthquake. The main disruption has been with provisioning
of services such as water, sewerage and power. However, these have now been restored to the vast majority of Christchurch and surrounding
areas.

With regards to Enatel, we have been very fortunate. Our staff are fine, albeit clearly unnerved by these events and are back at work this morning.
There is no damage to our buildings or services and other than some materials falling off shelves, we have gone relatively unscathed. Apart from
some minor clean up today we do not expect any disruption to business.

Thank you for your kind words of support, we now look forward to getting on with the business and recovering from what has been clearly
a traumatic experience for many.

December 2009 | Enatel host visit by Minister of Energy and Resources.

Minister of Energy and Resources at the Enatel Manufacturing Facility Minister of Energy and Resources at the Enatel Manufacturing Facility Minister of Energy and Resources at the Enatel Manufacturing Facility

On Friday 20th November, Enatel hosted a visit by the Rt. Hon. Gerry Brownlee, National Party MP and Minister of Energy and Resources. During his visit Mr. Brownlee met with Enatel's Managing Director, Gary Foot.

Discussions centred around the need for SME’s to be given fair and equal access to Government procurement, particularly in light of the New Zealand government announcing it will be investing up to $1.5 billion in open-access, dark-fibre infrastructure to accelerate the roll-out of ultra-fast broadband to 75 percent of New Zealanders over ten years. Mr Foot said, “Enatel’s locally designed and manufactured comprehensive range of leading edge technology DC power solutions are ideally suited for this application and we look forward to the opportunity to participate in this program”.

During the visit Mr. Brownlee was given a tour of Enatel’s design and manufacturing facilities in Christchurch and a demonstration of Enatel’s new Solar Inverter, which was of special interest to him. Foot said ”This is the only Inverter designed and manufactured in New Zealand and look forward to its commercial release in Q1 2010”.

Mr. Brownlee was particularly interested in the relationship between initial cost and long term benefit. It was explained by Foot, that whilst payback period in New Zealand was longer than that of Australia or other countries that currently have a Feed In Tariff (FIT) the obvious advantages are the preservation of New Zealand’s natural and energy resources as well as the measurable savings in monthly electricity charges to the household.

The savings are immediate and if you are the average home in New Zealand using about 15kW hours per day you could generate a substantial proportion of this from our 2.0kW inverter.
